Current Gallery: gallery1 ( piece)
This gallery represents primarily portraits from two projects. In the summer of 2007 I spent a month in the Yunnan province of China. Yunnan is in southwest China, near Tibet. It is home to over 25 different ethnic groups, each with their own unique attire. I was struck by the juxtaposition of modern influences and ancient practices. Satellite dishes and cell phones co-existed with a lack of refrigeration and a hole in the floor for bathroom facilities. I found the Tibetan regions especially interesting because of the appreciation of artistry in the most simple of things. Under the eaves of a simple home would crow a rooster carved out of wood and painted in rich colors. Ponies wore beautiful embroidered blankets. And the people themselves were attired in rich magentas and purples, gold embroidery and brocade. Faces were weathered and worn and the landscape seemed very much a part of the people themselves. Also in this gallery you will find paintings from an oral history project with Jewish elders who represented three immigration stories. One group grew up in early immigrant communities, another were Holocaust survivors who came in the 1940s-50s and the third were immigrants from the former Soviet Union who immigrated between 1970-1990s.
